It’s available in four trim levels – SE, Sport, AMG Line, and Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC. Even the entry level Mercedes A Class comes with 16-inch alloys, halogen headlamps, and the innovative MBUX infotainment system – it can be controlled via voice command, touchscreen, or via a touchpad on the centre console.

The Sport adds larger wheels, styling features, and two-zone automatic climate control while the AMG Line has motor racing influences inside and out. The top-of-the-range A 35 4MATIC is essentially a performance car with a powerful look.

Engines include a number of 1.3L petrol options, as well as a range of diesels – starting with a 1.5L model. Among the best for all-round performance is the 114hp diesel.

The Mercedes-Benz A Class comes in a variety of trims, each offering something slightly different, so it’s worth working out which A Class trim is right for you.

A Class SE

The SE is the ‘standard’ trim for the A Class. Despite being the base specification for the A Class, it still comes filled with features. This includes 16-inch alloy wheels, the innovative MBUX infotainment system, the ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice recognition system and a number of other features. With the tech-forward approach that the A Class has become known for there’s also DAB radio, Active Lane Keeping, Speed Limit Assist, Keyless Go and climate control alongside other more standard features. It’s worth keeping in mind that the sedan style car is not available in the SE.

A Class Sport

The sport adds a couple of small upgrades, these include the LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels and automatic climate controls.

A Class AMG

The AMG line has a number of trims in itself, but the classic AMG has 18-inch alloy wheels , AMG branded bodykit and its own steering wheel. The touchscreen also gets an upgrade, jumping up to a 10.3inch display. The AMG trim also has different levels, including the AMG Line Executive, AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus. Each of these packages has certain features bundled up from those available. The Premium Plus is the main one that adds anything extra that’s not available on the other trims, with multi-beam LED headlights, a panoramic sun-roof and other features.

Created by the internationally renowned Mercedes-Benz, the A Class has been a firm favourite of family motorosists since its launch in 1997. While the Mercedes-Benz A class was originally manufactured as purely a 5-door hatchback car, later generations introduced a 3-door hatchback version and then a 4-door sedan.

Now onto its fourth generation, the A Class is as popular as ever. The fourth generation introduced the 4-door sedan edition, which was something previously unseen in the A Class, as previously it had purely been a hatchback.

Brief History of the Mercedes Benz A Class

The Mercedes-Benz has a rich history, spanning four generations since 1997. While Mercedes-Benz announced that they were developing a compact car as early as 1994, it wasn’t until ‘07 that the A Class was finally available to drive.

Generation 1 (1997-2004) – The first A Class came out to much fanfare, with the exterior being designed by Coventry University’s Steve Matt for which he won ‘Designer of the year’ at the Autocar magazine awards. The car received a slight aesthetic upgrade in 2001. Over the course of the first generation, 1.1million A Class models were sold. This first generation of the A Class was only available as a 5-door hatchback.

Generation 2 (2004-2012) – The second generation introduced a 3-door hatchback to the series, to sit alongside the 5-door hatchback, which also received an update. It maintained the front-wheel drive but added in extra airbags and further airbag options, amongst other new safety features. The engine was given an upgrade, making it more powerful. The car was also made slightly roomier, both for passengers and luggage. Over the course of the 2nd generation other trims versions were introduced, including the F-Cell, Special Addition and the E-Cell.

Generation 3 (2013-2018) – With an increase in size on the previous generations and a completely new design, the A Class truly became a family car for the first time. It was aimed at directly competing with the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3, and was used to target much younger drivers than previous generations. It was the 3rd generation that saw the introduction of the popular AMG version of the car.

Generation 4 (2018-) – Now in its fourth generation, the A Class has added a 4-door sedan car to go alongside the classic 5-door hatchback, but it’s seen Mercedes-Benz retire the 3-door hatchback. It also saw the addition of some of the new tech that’s become the highlight of some of their other models, like the S Class.

Mercedes-Benz is well known as one of the most popular high end car brands, but that also means they can be a tough brand to start driving. The A Class is the cheapest way to get yourself behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz, so it is a great point of entry to the brand.

The great thing about the A-Class is that it gives you access to some of the best tech and features that Mercedes have on offer, but for a more accessible price. Plus, the A Class has over 4 generations of history, with each generation taking learnings from the previous and adding in any new innovations from other cars in the Mercedes-Benz catalogue, like the S Class.

What really sets it apart from similar models in this price and size range, like the BMW1 series or the Audi A3, is this tech and interior. While optional extras include voice controls, the car comes with 70inch touch screens as a standard, and the system learns your habits over time, for a truly personalised drive.

To take the personalisation even further, all of the functionality on the monitor can be arranged as you’d like them. So you can choose what order the speed, RPM, Sat Nav etc are in, allowing you to optimise your dashboard for your own personal needs.

The range has a whole host of optional extras that can take it up to the next level too, like the voice control mentioned previously, but also tech such as an augmented reality navigation display and the Active Lane Change Assist, which can help you stay in your lane and also automatically change lanes for you. This last addition has seen the car be rewarded 5/5 for safety from Euro NCAP.

It’s not just the tech that sets the A Class apart though. It scored over 90% for both adult and child occupancy in the same Euro NCAP report so it’s safe for everyone, plus the interiors are comfortable but stylish, perfect for all the family.

Before you buy used a car on finance there are a number of things that it’s always worth checking, whatever the model. Whilst there are often great savings to be made on purchasing used cars, the very nature of purchasing a used car means it’s worth double checking a few things.

  • Check for any existing damage to the car – both inside and out
  • Check for any signs of rust
  • Take it for a test drive and listen out for any unusual noises, like rattling

While the newer generations of the A Class are still a little more expensive, they may be less likely to have any existing problems. If you’re considering buying a used A Class from before generation four it’s even more important to check for any problems, as these cars will have been on the road for a long time.
