The first salvo in VW’s mission to eventually become a 100% electric car maker, The ID.3 is a five-seat, five-door hatchback with rear-wheel drive, an infotainment touchscreen and much more besides.

Thanks to not having to accommodate an engine block and cooling system, the overhangs are short and the wheelbase is elongated which is good news for storing the batteries underneath and the humans above. This car is compact enough to park in the city but it also has remarkable amounts of space on the inside.

Basic models of the ID.3 have a range of approximately 200 miles from its 45kWh batteries, whilst the mid-range models come with a 58kWh battery that ups that mile range to 250. The top-of-the-range models take it one step further squeezing out up to 330 miles between charges via its 77kWh battery, though you lose the middle back seat for the privilege.

Depending on the trim option, most used ID.3s will sell used from anything from £33,000 upwards, and Volkswagen has gone trim crazy with as many as 8 different variations from the basic (ID.3 Life) to the upmarket feature-packed versions such as the ID.3 Max.

ID.3 Life

This entry-level ID.3 is one of the most popular and comes with such standard features as LED headlights, a 10” touchscreen with satnav, climate control, keyless start, front and rear parking sensors, digital dashboard, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.

ID.3 Family

As the name suggests, designed with the family in mind this trim level comes with electric folding door mirrors, a heated steering wheel and front seats and a panoramic sunroof.

ID.3 Tech

A gadget lover’s dream, this trim comes with an upgraded sound system, a reversing camera, a head-up display, and illuminated door handles. In addition to this, to help prevent collisions it also features side assist.

ID.3 Max

This trim adds a lot more kit and is an enhancement of the Tech. Featuring electric folding mirrors, a heated steering wheel and front seats, dual-zone climate control, progressive steering and a feature VW has named Dynamic Chassis Control that allows you to configure the vehicle’s settings.

After being shown as a concept car back in 2016 the production model of the ID.3 was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019. Named as the “third generation” of Volkswagen (Beatle > Golf > ID.), it’s VWs current “halo car”: the electric car for everyone.

Assembly of the ID.3 was at first limited to Germany at VWs Zwickau factory, with additional factories opening in Dresden and China.

Brief History of the Volkswagen Id3

First shown as a concept car at the Paris Motor Show in 2016 and came packed with innovative technology not all of which made it through to the production model. Features such as video cameras instead of wing mirrors and retractable LiDAR sensors for use in autonomous driving didn’t make the cut.

Originally named the I.D. Neo, Volkswagen confirmed production of this car in September 2019 at the International Motor Show in Germany. Its release was followed by the bigger ID.4, the ID.5 and the upcoming ID. Buzz. You can also find a Cupra-badged version called the Born.

Volkswagen knows how to build cars and how to build them really, really well. The underpinning architecture of the ID.3 (and all of Volkswagen Group’s derivatives) is extremely clever, drives beautifully and is built from the ground up to offer only electric motoring.

The ID.3 is a smidgen wider than the Golf and a bit taller but despite its long wheelbase being a bit shorter than Volkswagen’s popular hatchback, it does the same job but is better for the environment.

Those ID.3s with a higher spec are always going to cost more as they will depreciate less than the entry-level model, for example, so you could lower the monthly cost of finance by opting for a PCP arrangement. Older versions of the ID.3 may well be a lot cheaper and securing a car via a hire purchase plan could be a cost-effective option.

The Volkswagen ID.3 as with most electric cars makes use of the CCS charging system for charging at home or either slow or fast public charging points.

The time it takes to charge the batteries will depend on what type of charging point you use. A slow charge from a three pin household plug is 3kW and will take 26 hours to charge a battery from 0 to 100%. A faster charge of 7kW, the type of power provided by a wallbox on the side of your house, will take 7.5 hours. A rapid charge of 125kW from a rapid DC chargepoint, of the type you find at motorway service stations, can charge up to 80% in 38 minutes.

Current energy prices affect cost estimates and will vary greatly depending on your home energy supplier. The same goes when it comes to public charging points as different companies are likely to have different tariffs. As a rule of thumb, charging an ID.3 at home is probably going to come in at between 4.1 and 7.7p per mile, but could go as low as 2p a mile if you get a special EV tariff for overnight charging.

The Golf is VW’s most popular car, but eventually, it is likely the ID range will replace some of VW’s older models, including the Golf.
