There are a number of E Class models available, each of which adds something extra to the standard ‘SE’ variant. Some of these are in look and feel whereas others include new tech or adjustments to the sound system or wheel size. The E Class models available are the SE, AMG Line, AMG Line Edition and the AMG Line Edition Premium.

SE

The SE model is the ‘standard’ model of the E Class, and as such it’s technically the most basic. As this is a premium car though, the basics are generally very good and many will not feel the need to go above them. They include cruise control, climate control, keyless doors and engine, leather upholstery, heated front seats reversing camera, DAB & bluetooth radio and sat-nav. This all combined makes it a very good car, even without the additions of the other trims.

AMG Line

The AMG Line is a model that mainly tweaks the look and feel of the E Class. It gives it a slightly sportier finish. It’s also more limiting on the engine, as it’s only available in the hybrid.

AMG Line Edition

Essentially the AMG Line but without the hybrid engine, it’s similar in pretty much every other aspect too.

Mercedes-Benz is a well renowned international car manufacturer. With a rich history in the motoring world across numerous different models and decades. The E Class slots neatly into their offering, alongside other popular cars like the A Class, B Class and C Class.

With over 5 generations dating back to 1993, and a history dating back to different models even before that, the Mercedes-Benz E Class is an excellent option for those looking to drive an executive saloon car. It’s become one of Mercedes-Benz bestsellers in the years since its release and shows no sign of slowing down.

Brief History of the Mercedes Benz E Class

The E Class has a long history, even before its inception in 1993, as it has its roots in earlier models, dating all the way back to 1953. This is before the fuel-injection model that made the E Class famous became ubiquitous to all of their cars. At this point the E stopped being a subclass and became the E Class proper. Since then it’s moved on to be Mercedes-Benz’ best selling model.

First generation (1993-1995): The original model of the E Class. It was available in a diesel and V8 engine. It was also available in a 3litre and 3.2litre. This is the car that set the standard for the model to come.

Second generation (1996-2002): It was the second generation that took this standard and confirmed the E Class’s position at the upper end of the market. It was available as a sedan and as a wagon.

Third generation (2003-2009): The third generation saw notable improvements on the previous generation, without any large standout changes. Over the course of its lifespan it had a number of facelifts and a couple of special edition models, including one aimed at attracting younger drivers.

Fourth generation (2010-2016): The fourth generation is where the technology really started to improve. It’s where a number of the newer technologies, that have now become standard, were introduced. This included lane keeping assistant, blind spot monitor and a number of other things. There were other major facelifts during this generation.

Fifth generation (2017-present): The current generation of the Mercedes-Benz E Class. It’s during this generation that the E Class became even more tech-heavy. It’s now only behind the S Class in terms of available tech within the Mercedes-Benz range.

The popularity of the E Class highlights why it’s a great option to buy, both new and used. With so many on the road it means that there’s deals to be had on second hand, or used, Mercedes-Benz E Class models.

While the headline cost of buying an E Class can sometimes seem a little out of reach, the day to day run costs of the car are actually fairly reasonable. And, if you’ve picked up the car used there’s even better chances for a good deal to combine with the running costs. The car offers an option for an automatic gearbox as well as low CO2 emissions on the petrol 300e and diesel 300de plug-in hybrids.

Some of the slightly beefier engines drastically increase the CO2 emissions, so keep that in mind when you’re looking at a used E Class.

The E Class is excellent in terms of safety, with the most recent generation boasting 7 airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, a tiredness sensing system, auto-drying brakes and a bunch of other superb features. All of these come together to help make a really safe experience, and that’s without even bringing in the ‘Drive Pilot’ system, which offers a number of automatic features aimed at taking the pressure off driving, like road sign reading, cruise control and other factors. It’s essentially as close to auto-driving as you can get in today’s market and when combined with your own driving it adds an extra layer of safety.

The interiors are stylish and comfortable, without being anything special. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t still excellent. The seats and steering wheel are adjustable and there’s a number of other features throughout the car that are aimed at increasing your comfort and the luxury feel.

The features of the E Class are excellent, even at the most basic level. So you’re unlikely to find yourself wanting. The most basic features include the likes of cruise control, keyless entry, an infotainment system, reverse park camera and a whole host of other bits. And that’s all before you look at any of the other models.

Any time you’re buying a car used, you need to look out for a few things, whatever the model or make. Always look out for any patches of rust or any other wear and tear. You want to keep an eye out for anything that could be costly to repair, especially with a Mercedes-Benz as they are notoriously expensive to maintain.

Always go for a test drive, this will give you a chance to spot any unusual noises, rattles or hums plus it will give you an opportunity to make sure it’s handling as it should.

The E Class is actually a fairly reliable car, but there are a few things you should take particular notice of. Always check the alloys for any corrosion. Replacements could be fairly costly, especially if it’s more than one wheel. Listen out for any juddering with the diesel models. There’s a known issue with injectors and this won’t be cheap to fix.

If you’re looking to buy a used Mercedes-Benz E Class then you may well want to consider car finance. Car finance will let you spread the costs of buying a new car out of a period of time, and with a luxury car like the Mercedes-Benz E Class, that could make all the difference.

At Choose My Car we are experts in car finance for used cars, and can help you find the best possible car finance deal for a Mercedes-Benz E Class. Our experts are here to help you find an E Class deal that’s tailored to your life and financial needs.
