Learn more about the Tesla Model S

The big, beautiful, stupidly quick family sedan that started it all, the Model S remains a tremendous luxury car. With amazing technology, plush seating and a range that can still embarrass brand new cars from German rivals, a pre-loved Model S remains one of the best electric cars on sale today. Fill all five seats, plant your foot and get ludicrous (responsibly).

Tesla didn’t just re-invent the Electric Car when the Model S hit the road back in 2012, they put luxury car makers on notice. This was the future: an executive sedan that was roomier, quieter, cleverer and faster than any other car on sale.

With a flat battery running the length of the car and the motors taking up as much space as a watermelon, Tesla found acres of space that would otherwise have been filled by internal combustion gubbins. They then gave that space back to the occupants, – so much, in fact, that owners started camping in their cars. There is literally a camping mode in the air con screen to cater to them.

Tesla was also the first to offer an infotainment system that was bigger than your telly, with a huge vertical touchscreen replacing the usual knobs and dials that most car companies were using at the time. They also made that system upgradable. Over the air.

So it has the smarts – what else does it have? Two words:

Ludicrous Mode.

Find a model with Ludicrous Mode and you’re looking at a car that’ll pelt you to 60 miles an hour in 2.5 seconds, faster than any other executive family car on the planet.

All this wrapped up in a luxury package that has aged very well.

Battery degradation has been minimal, the infotainment continues to be upgraded while you sleep and the mechanics tend to be in pretty good shape. Early models had teething troubles with the motors but most cars of the earliest vintages had that taken care of under warranty.

If you’re searching for a large executive sedan, the Model S – even more so than the later Model 3 – is a bargain.

A large, comfortable and spacious hatchback sedan with not one boot but two – the other squirreled away where the engine would otherwise be. With a choice of rear wheel and all wheel drive, the Model S gets its power from electric motors mounted directly on the axle.

Luxurious without being ostentatious, its Jaguar-like exterior was designed to be classy and it still looks good today.

With more space than any other car in its class – and a shed load more speed – it remains the luxury performance EV to beat.

Brief History of the Tesla Model S

Released back in 2012, the Model S was Tesla’s first ground-up vehicle, after the Lotus-based Roadster. They were on a mission to prove that an electric car wasn’t just a good choice, it was the best choice. Boy did they succeed.

Within months of release it was eating into sales from BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the USA, winning award after award.

It was faster than any other luxury sedan, it had better tech than any other luxury sedan and, with hundreds of miles of range, you didn’t need to sacrifice anything to own one.

In short, it’s a modern classic.

If you want a tech powerhouse with a burst of speed that tests the integrity of your eyeballs while saving you a fortune on fuel, here’s where you find it.

Early models retain their lifetime free supercharging promise (linked to the car, not the owner) so if you only ever charge at superchargers your fuel is free.

Early models could also come with two more jump seats in the rear, giving the Model S 7 seats for family duties.

Older cars will be out of warranty for both the car and the drivetrain and repairs aren't cheap. Happily, most of the known issues with the Model S were identified early and replaced within warranty.

This lack of warranty could hit your finance a little, however, so look out for that. With solid reliability on the main components, however, future residuals should be high.

Finding your Perfect Tesla Model S is just part of the journey: buying or leasing it with great- value car finance? That’s the cherry on the cake.

ChooseMyCar.com’s fantastic range of Car Finance options can help you to drive away with the Tesla you’ve always wanted for much less than you ever expected to pay – even if you’ve had
problems getting credit in the past.

As the older car, the Model S can actually be bought for less on the Used market than the Model 3. If you can find a good one, it’s one heck of a bargain, too – with more space and more speed than its younger sibling.

Depending on the trim level, yes it can be. Models without a P badge or underscore won’t trouble the fastest Model 3, however.

A Bugatti Chiron will hit 60mph in 2.3 seconds and the fastest Model S in 2.4 seconds so you’re unlikely to notice the difference unless you’re looking at your bank balance (a Chiron is well over a £million, after all). The chiron has a higher top speed.

Tesla batteries are warrantied for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. This warranty hasn’t really been troubled by the battery, however, with some units we’ve seen holding onto more 94% of their range age after 8 years. It depends on how hard they’ve been driven.

Vampire Drain, or the phenomenon of batteries losing charge when parked, is a real thing but the difference you’ll see is minimal. According to some tests, this may be around 5% a fortnight on a model S as the car keeps a computerised eye on the battery.
