Learn more about the Peugeot e-208

The Peugeot e-208 is a five-door electric city car with range enough to take it cross country, if you need to. It has a compact, sporty shape with a long bonnet, giving it a distinctive but very modern look. Peugeot have retained the cockpit design from the petrol original with a row of piano-style toggle switches that might make you feel like you’re playing a church organ if it wasn’t for the large 10” touchscreen and the configurable 3D head-up display in front of you.

By keeping the cockpit and body design from the petrol version, Peugeot have delivered an electric car that keeps the familiar look of a petrol one and you have to look closely to spot the “e” badge or the body-coloured grille elements which give it away. This is perfect if you want an electric car but don’t want to shout “look at me, I’m driving an electric car!”

As with most electric vehicles, the e-208 uses regenerative braking to help charge the battery while driving. This extends the range, allowing you to go longer between charges. It can feel a bit “odd” if you’re used to a petrol car but you quickly get used to it and it soon becomes normal.

Despite being a new market for most consumers, the used electric car market is really starting to take off as more and more businesses are going green by moving their fleets over to electric. This means you can now look at used electric cars and expect to find a pretty decent selection on offer and the e-208 is no exception, with a range of colours, trim and mileage on offer.

Peugeot e-208 100kW Active Premium

This is the basic model but includes front and rear curtain airbags, ESP with Hill Assist, cloth seat upholstery and metallic paint choices.

Peugeot e-208 100kW Allure Premium

The Active Allure adds rear headrests, door sill protection, a 180-degree colour reversing camera and LED indicators in the mirrors to the Active Premium spec.

Peugeot e-208 100kW GT

The GT trim has metallic paint options, 17” alloys, frameless rear-view mirror, LED headlights, front parking sensors, voice recognition and a larger touchscreen with sat- nav.

Peugeot e-208 100kW GT Premium

This is the top spec’d model with the GT trim, 17” alloys, keyless entry, adaptive cruise control and Alcantara and cloth seats. The electric motor gets you from 0 – 62 in 8.1 seconds.

The e-208 is 100% electric with a WLTP (World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) range of up to 225 miles. The vehicle comes with a Type 2 (Mode 3) charging cable as standard and Peugeot recommend a compatible Wallbox charging unit, although with an optional cable you can also charge it from a regular domestic 3-pin socket. Using a 7kW Wallbox the car will charge in approx. 7.5 hours or 24 hours using a regular socket in your home or garage.

Brief History of the Peugeot e-208

Peugeot first made an electric vehicle (EV) in 1942 (!) and an early electric 106 in 1995 but this is their first modern mass-produced EV and was released in 2019. It’s not too surprising that they’ve gone the route of taking a popular conventional model and worked out how to swap out the engine for an electrical motor. Peugeot seems to like the format and is rolling it out across other ranges.

The Peugeot e-208 stands out just enough, but not too much. It has all the features you expect in a compact electric car: it’s quiet, comfortable and has all the financial advantages of zero road tax and zero carbon emissions.

As a popular fleet car, there is already a great choice of trim and colours available in the used car market. It can accept faster charging rates (up to 100Kwh) than similar electric vehicles like the Renault Zoe and the Mini Electric which can only manage 50Kwh.

With the used car market for electric cars still in its infancy, it’s difficult to tell how these models will depreciate and therefore which financing option to look at. As with buying any used car, look at the mileage because, while an electric car has far fewer moving parts than a petrol or diesel engine so takes longer to wear out, wear and tear on tyres and bakes may be higher.

If you’re thinking about investing in a Peugeot e-208, make ChooseMyCar.com the first place you look. With cars available on PCP (Personal Contract Purchase), HP (Hire Purchase) or leasing contract, you can drive away with a brand new vehicle without having to pay the full price upfront. Car finance allows you to spread out the cost of your new vehicle, so you can start enjoying your new ride now!

It’s quicker off the mark than a Renault Zoe but not quite as zippy as the Mini Electric and it has a better range than the Fiat 500 or Honda E, though the Zoe has better range. It does give a more comfortable ride than the Zoe or the Mini although the suspension feels soft and this means that with the forces the nose experiences with the regenerative braking system it can feel as if the nose is diving. Noise-wise the cabin is quieter than some of those competitors.

One size fits all. They all have the 100kW, 138 BHP motor.

To manufacture, an electric car is generally no greener than a traditional car – in fact with the rare earth metals and lithium required for the battery and electronics, some may even be less green – though not by much. It’s worth remembering, however, that manufacture plus disposal makes up less than a third of the pollution of any vehicle, EVs included, with 2/3rds coming from burning fuel. In operation, the e-208, along with other EVs, is far more eco-friendly, with zero emissions from the vehicle itself. Of course, if the electricity you use to charge it comes from sustainable sources like wind then you’ll be significantly ahead of fossil fuels when it comes to CO2. Check with your energy provider to see what percentage of your power is green.

The compact build design and the electric motor make the e-208 a great car for city driving. The repeated braking and low speeds you experience when driving around a city are ideal for extending the range of a compact electric car like the e-208. It’s small and nippy up to 30mph, and there is no pollution to worry those around the vehicle when passing schools or sitting at lights.

Its soft ride, with a tendency to nosedive and the driver position, is described as “unconventional” (WhatCar) but otherwise, if you’re looking for an electric car with decent performance for its size then the e-208 is well worth checking out. Range can be impacted a little more than, say, a Zoe in winter months, though 2022 models combat this with better electronics.
