Common problems with SsangYong cars often involve electrical gremlins (immobilizer, sensors, wiring), diesel engine issues (fuel system, DPF, turbo lag), suspension/chassis wear (ball joints, handbrake cables), and paint/corrosion issues, with specific models like the Rexton facing ball joint failures, while newer ones like the Tivoli see cheap interior trim wear and some engine/fuel recalls, alongside general concerns about parts availability and dealer support for older models.

In 2019, SsangYong discontinued the Rodius/Stavic without any successor planned citing poor sales and implementation of the Euro 6D-Temp standards as both the 2.0L e-XDI 200 I4 and 2.2L e-XDI 220 I4 diesel engines offered on the Rodius are unable to be modified further to comply with the new emission regulations.

Getting SsangYong parts can be hit-or-miss; common items from UK/EU online retailers or used parts sites are relatively easy and quick, but specialized or less common parts might require ordering from Korea, leading to a 1-2 day wait if in stock or 6-8 weeks if needing production/shipping, though some owners report surprisingly fast deliveries, even within a week. The dealer network’s strength varies by location, and some independent garages are hesitant to work on them, making online options crucial for owners.

SsangYong cars, known for their robust design and value, are generally reliable but do come with a few common issues that owners should be aware of. Engine problems are frequently reported, particularly with the 2.0-liter diesel engines.

Takeover by the KG Group In August 2022, South Korea’s Free Trade Commission approved KG Group acquisition of a 61% majority stake in SsangYong through the consortium. The acquisition payments were completed later that month.
