The Range Of An Electric Vehicle

All Electric Cars are different and have different ranges. How far they will go depends on the car, how you drive it and the conditions you drive it in.

Some older Electric Cars – and even a few newer “city” models, have ranges of just over 100 miles. This might not sound like much but if you have a driveway to plug it in, or a charger at work, this would be plenty for most commutes. The average UK journey is far less than people expect – 8.4 miles. Of course, there are many, many exceptions but a low-mileage Electric Car (EV) could cover most of your needs if you charge it regularly.

Most modern Electric Cars, however, have more than 200 miles of range available to them. With Rapid Chargers at all UK service stations and thousands of other pubs, fast food restaurants and drive-thrus, you’re never far from a place to charge, making road tripping a 200+ mile Electric Car a relatively easy experience.

Some planning may be needed – it’s certainly advisable as the public charging network matures. Many Electric Cars will help with this, routing you to your destination via the chargers you’ll need to use. Teslas are very, very good at this: just type in where you’re going and the car will do the rest.

It’s best to plan a little yourself, however.

An app like ZapMap or Plugshare will show you every charger on your route. They’ll tell you how powerful they are, whether they’re working – even if they’re in use.

Long Distance Travel Top Tips

  • Be aware of the highest power your car can charge and aim for charges which match or exceed this. Be aware, however, that the more powerful the charger, the more it’s likely to cost.
  • Plan for a destination that has a charger if you’re going long distance. Many hotels, train stations and car parks now have chargers available: seek them out so you can charge while you’re out and about or sleeping.
  • Cold and Rain can reduce the range of your car by up to a third. Always keep this in mind in the winter and check the winter range of your car before buying.
  • The faster you travel, the less your range. If you’re spending a lot of time on a motorway you will need to stop more frequently. However, with a modern 200 mile+ Electric Car, you can still travel 140+ miles at 70mph without needing to stop, even in Winter.

Can I go Long Distance?

As the charging infrastructure continues to improve, long-distance travel in an EV gets constantly easier. Thousands of rapid chargers are installed every year and electric forecourts are now being built all over the UK.

Road tripping an Electric Car is both possible and increasingly reliable. As we get closer to 2035, the infrastructure will transform completely.

Now is a great time to begin your Electric Car journey.
