Learn more about the Audi A4

Comfortable and refined on the motorway or around town, the A4 has been Audi’s leading mid-sized car for years, picking up ‘car of the year’ accolades with the 2016 release of the current generation. A generation that has since had a facelift.

Available as a saloon and as an estate, the A4 is a lot of car for the price – with 17-inch alloys and LED daytime running lights as standard. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported.

The saloon and estate come in four trim levels – SE, Sport, S Line, and Black Edition. Each configuration provides front and rear parking sensors and three-zone climate control as standard.

The Sport comes with 18-inch wheels and leather seats, while the S Line offers 19-inch alloys with leather and Alcantara seats, and LED headlights. The S Line also comes with optional sports suspension and body kit.

The Black Edition offers 19-inch alloys with rear privacy glass and Audi Sound System.

There is a wide range of petrol and diesel-powered engines available, starting with the base 35 2.0-litre petrol, suitable for town or motorway driving. For added power, opt for the 40 S Tronic engine, which is available in both petrol and diesel.

With the recent style updates to this generation, now’s a great time to be keeping an eye out for any used Audi A4 cars for sale, as people look to upgrade to the newer models.

SE

The shared trim levels are the SE, Sport and S Line, while the Audi A4 Avant has the S4 and the Audi A4 saloon has Black Edition. The Audi A4 SE is the standard trim level for both the Avant and saloon models of the car. The standard features of the A4 are still excellent, with 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7 inch colour display, DAB digital radio, Xenon headlights, rear parking sensors and a number of other features, including a number of safety-focused ones.

Sport

Audi A4 Sport takes everything from the SE trim and adds in sat-nav as standard, some additional engine options and some sportier finishing touches.

S Line

The top of the range for both models is the Audi A4 S Line, although both the Avant S4 and the saloon’s Black Edition are the tops for each individually. The S Line offers everything you’d get from the SE and Sport, with additional features on top. These include a much sportier bodykit, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights all round, different suspension options and access to the full range of engines.

Black Edition

The A4 Black Edition is similar for the saloon, offering slightly different finishes and options, making it an excellent choice for something stylish with the saloon.

The Audi A4 is a continuation of the Audi 80’s legacy and as such, each generation is numbered a little oddly. The current generation is known as the B9, for instance. The Audi A4 leans heavily on the Volkswagen technology, using the Volkswagen Group B Platform across its 5 generations.

The Audi A4 is one of the best family saloon cars on the market. The Audi A4 is not just keeping pace, but often sets it against its main rivals; the Mercedes C-Class and the BMW 3-Series.

It’s an excellent choice as a family car, available in both saloon and estate. There’s space for all the family, plus comfort throughout, not just in the front. The entertainment system means you and your family will never be bored either.

Brief History of the Audi A4

The Audi A4 started life as a continuation of the Audi 80 range. In 1994 the first official generation of the A4 was released as the next in line in the Audi 80 range, the B5.

  • Audi A4 First Generation – B5 (Typ 8D; 1994–2001): The first generation of the Audi A4 saw them move more towards the luxury mid-range market than they had previously.
  • Audi A4 Second Generation – B6 (Typ 8E/8H; 2001–2006): This introduced the Volkswagen Group B6 Platform to the Audi A4 range and took design inspiration from the second-generation Audi A6.
  • Audi A4 Third Generation – B7 (Typ 8E/8H; 2004–2009): This was essentially a facelift from the previous generation, with a few minor modifications.
  • Audi A4 Fourth Generation – B8 (Typ 8K; 2008–2016): The fourth generation saw a change in the wheelbase from previous generations, which greatly increased the legroom at the back.
  • Audi A4 Fifth Generation – B9 (Typ 8W; 2016–present): The current generation is where the A4 came into its own. Where previous generations had lent heavily on other Audi models the fifth generation is where it really became its own car and competed strongly with its competitors.

So what made the Audi A4 get named car of the year in 2016, and how has it kept up with its competitors since?

One of the main things that sets the Audi A4 apart from its competitors is the price point. It’s a much more affordable car than its main rivals, and this is a nod in its favour.

If you’re after a reliable family car that’s a pleasure to both drive and look at, then the Audi A4 is the car for you. With plenty of space upfront and in the back, plus a handy 3-stage seat folding system for when you need to fit bulky items and still have people sat in the back, it’s an excellent choice for any family.

You’ll find an automatic braking system in the car as standard, which is a great safety feature to have, as are the mounts for child seats in the back. Other tech highlights include the electric boot, ‘virtual cockpit’ display, excellent entertainment system and the multifunctional dashboard screen.

It’s worth noting that the 2019 update got rid of the much loved Audi rotary controller, replacing it with a slightly awkward touch-screen. If you’re buying used it may be worth keeping an eye out for cars that still have the original rotary controller as it’s much less distracting.

The Audi A4 is available in both saloon and estate varieties, meaning there’s something for almost every family need. The petrol and diesel engine options provide flexibility and are excellent for driving around town or slightly more adventurous family trips.

The Audi A4 is available in two different body styles, the saloon and estate (also known as the Audi Avant), each of which shares a couple of trim levels then has its own variations too, along with a selection of engines.

On top of the trim levels, there’s a whole range of excellent Audi engines to choose from, both in terms of petrol and diesel. These engines include four petrol options and three diesel. There’s also a large number of optional extras available, although these are expensive when you’re buying the car new, it’s worth looking out for them when buying a used Audi A4.
