Volkswagen Id3 Practicality & Boot Space

The Id3 proves that electric cars don’t have to compromise on practicality. The 385 litre boot is a decent size, easily handling a weekly shopping trip or holiday luggage for a small family. The rear seats fold down to create a flat loading area, expanding cargo space significantly. Clever storage solutions throughout the cabin provide plenty of space for phones, drinks, and everyday items.

We’ve had our Id3 for eight months now and absolutely love it. The space inside is incredible and the running costs are so much lower than our old petrol car. Charging at home is convenient and we’ve only needed to use public chargers a few times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the Id3 has proven reliable for daily use since its launch. VW has addressed early software issues, and the mechanical components are generally robust. Electric motors have fewer moving parts than petrol engines, potentially improving long term reliability. Most owners report trouble free motoring, though keeping software updated is important for optimal performance.

Charging times vary depending on the method used. A home wallbox typically takes 6-8 hours for a full charge, perfect for overnight charging. Rapid public chargers can add significant range in 30-45 minutes, ideal for longer journeys. The Id3 supports fast charging up to 125kW, making it one of the quicker charging electric cars available.

Real world range varies with driving conditions, but most owners achieve 200-240 miles in mixed driving. Motorway driving reduces range, while gentle town driving can exceed the official figures. Cold weather affects range, as does use of heating and air conditioning. For most daily driving, range anxiety becomes a non issue after the first few weeks of ownership.

This depends on your driving patterns and priorities. The Id3 offers much lower running costs, quieter operation, and zero local emissions. If you mainly drive locally and can charge at home, electric makes excellent sense. However, if you regularly make long journeys or can’t install home charging, a petrol car might be more convenient currently. Consider your typical weekly mileage and charging options.

Insurance costs are moderate for the class, typically falling into groups 18-22 depending on the variant. While slightly higher than equivalent petrol cars, the difference isn’t dramatic. The advanced safety features and five star Euro NCAP rating help keep premiums reasonable. Shopping around between insurers and considering specialist electric car policies can help reduce costs further.
