Brief History of the Vauxhall Astra

• Initially launched as a right-hand-drive version of the Opel Kadett and was Vauxhall’s first front-wheel-drive car.
• Won What Car’s ‘Car of the Year’ award for 1980.
• Second generation launched in 1984 with a completely restyled body, winning European Car of the year the following year.
• The third generation arrived in 1991, although it wasn't a huge departure from the previous iteration.
• The Mk4 launched in 1998 with improvements to the ride and handling of the MK3, with a greater focus on safety too.
• The fifth-generation was released in 2004 as a five-door hatchback, followed by a five-door estate and a three-door hatchback which featured a ‘panoramic windscreen’.
• The 2009 sixth-generation car enjoyed strong sales and was even used as the “Reasonably Priced Car” on Top Gear.
• The most recent version was released in 2015 and features the “OnStar” system, which allows the driver to call for assistance with an in-built dial.
