Is the Volvo S80 Expensive to Run?

As a premium executive saloon, the S80 comes with running costs that reflect its positioning in the market. Fuel economy varies depending on the engine choice, with the smaller petrol units achieving around 30-35 mpg in real-world driving, while the more powerful engines deliver closer to 28-32 mpg. Volvo S80 Practicality & Boot Space

For a large executive saloon, the S80 offers impressive practicality that makes it suitable for both business and family use. The 440-litre boot is a decent size for the class, easily accommodating multiple large suitcases or a substantial weekly shopping trip. The boot opening is wide and the loading lip is relatively low, making it easy to load heavy items. Inside the cabin, there are plenty of useful storage spaces, including door pockets, cup holders, and a generous glovebox.

Bought our S80 three years ago and it’s been absolutely brilliant. The comfort levels are incredible for long journeys and the build quality feels rock solid. Only minor issue has been a sensor fault, but everything else has been reliable.

Yes, the Volvo S80 has proven to be reliable for daily use. Owners report good build quality and dependable performance over many years. Like any premium car, regular servicing is essential to maintain reliability. Common minor issues include electrical sensor faults, but major mechanical problems are relatively rare. The solid Swedish engineering means you can expect a dependable car with proper maintenance.

When viewing a used S80, pay attention to the service history and ensure all major services have been completed on schedule. Check the electronic systems thoroughly, including the infotainment, climate control, and parking sensors. Look for any signs of suspension wear, particularly on higher mileage examples. Diesel versions should have evidence of regular longer journeys to prevent DPF issues.

The S80 offers a different approach compared to BMW or Mercedes alternatives. While it may not match them for sporty handling or cutting-edge technology, it excels in comfort, safety, and build quality. The interior is exceptionally well-made and the ride quality is outstanding. It’s less expensive to buy used than equivalent German cars, making it excellent value for money.

Maintenance costs are moderate for the executive car class. While parts and servicing are more expensive than mainstream cars, they’re generally reasonable for a premium vehicle. The strong reliability record means unexpected repair bills are less common. Finding a Volvo specialist can help reduce servicing costs compared to main dealer prices while maintaining quality.

The 2.0-liter T5 turbo petrol engine offers the best balance of performance and economy for most buyers. It provides adequate power with reasonable fuel consumption and has a good reliability record. The more powerful T6 engine offers better performance but with higher running costs. Diesel engines provide better fuel economy but can be more expensive to maintain.
