Learn more about the Volkswagen Id4

For those who love SUVs and electric vehicles, the new Volkswagen ID4 has blasted onto the market as VWs answer to the electric SUV for “everyman”. A dependable platform with a great ride, plenty of power and tonnes of interior space – all at a relatively affordable price – make the ID.4 a fantastic all-round EV Crossover.

The appearance of the ID.4 has been designed to match the look of the ID.3 and, just like its predecessor, it comes fitted with slender LED headlights allied to a full-width LED light. As with the majority of electric cars, there is no front grille.

Inside there’s no gear stick, just an oversized knob positioned behind the steering wheel. The driver information panel provides all the information you need such as battery power status and speed on a clear display. All other functions can be accessed using the 10-inch central screen that is also voice controlled.

There is plenty of legroom for rear seat passengers and the boot space comes in at a generous 543-litre capacity, which is pretty impressive considering the size of the batteries under the floor.

Being a relatively new release means that finding a used Volkswagen ID4 could be challenging; however, you can find models such as the ID.4 Life, ID.4 Style, ID.4 GTX and the ID.4 GTX Max. Price will vary greatly depending on which model you go for, but you are looking at approximately £41,000 for the Life and up to £58,000 for the GTX.

ID.4 Life

The entry-level model of the ID.4 still provides a plethora of extras as standard such as alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control and wireless app connect.

ID.4 Style

Volkswagen has called this trim the ‘Style’ and it certainly lives up to its name with its panoramic glass roof, alloy wheels, matrix LED headlights with automatic headlight control. Inside, there is Air Care Climatronic 3-zone air conditioning with rear control panel, 65% tint rear glass windows, a rear-view camera, and keyless entry.

ID.4 GTX

The next level trim features an augmented reality head-up display, 4 alloy wheels, the “Discover Max” navigation infotainment display with 12-inch viewscreen. This sportier version gets its performance from the all-wheel-drive, all-electric drive, and high-range 299PS 77kWh (Net) battery.

ID.4 GTX Max

This top-of-the-range trim features everything you find with the GTX, but with the addition of 90% tinted laminated safety glass from the B-pillar backwards. Adaptive chassis control that includes driving profile selection and a heat pump.

Voted World Car of the Year for 2021, the ID.4 first debuted as a concept car at the 2017 auto shows in Shanghai and Frankfurt.

It wasn’t until September 2020 that the car was unveiled globally and, unlike its predecessor that was built and targeted for the European market, the ID.4 has been designed for the North American market too. Delivery to customers in Europe began in the latter part of 2020, and early 2021 for North American buyers.

Brief History of the Volkswagen Id4

The Volkswagen ID.4 has been in production since 2020 and is assembled in three locations worldwide: Germany, USA, and China. The ID.4 was envisaged as an upgrade on the previous model ID.3 and features many enhancements not found in its predecessor.

Classed as a compact, crossover SUV it comes as either a rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive or dual-motor, all-wheel-drive, and its lithium-ion batteries can give a maximum range of 323 miles between charging.

With the ID.4, Volkswagen has built upon the impressive qualities of the ID.3, as well as ironing out some of the kinks and criticisms that befell its predecessors, such as the quality issues with the interior and a less than excellent practicality. Volkswagen has addressed these problems and created an SUV that has plenty of room, excellent performance and a wider range of trims.

When it comes to buying an ID.4 on finance it’s important to fully understand what you will be using the car for. Will it be the main family car? Are you likely to travel long distances? These questions are important because the answers will help you to select the right trim and specs to suit your needs and will affect the cost of your finance.

At home with a 3-pin plug from empty to full, you are looking at 36 hours. But you should absolutely never do this. Tis a silly thing to do. Have a 7KW wallbox installed and that’ll come down to 8 hours for a full charge.

Find a 150KW rapid point and you can take this to about 45 minutes (or 30 minutes to 80%) while you’re out and about.

Yes. EV charging is standardised so public chargepoints all use the same plug (“type 2”) for AC charging and CCS for DC Rapid Charging. Both are widespread.

The standard rear-wheel-drive setup recorded a 0-60 sprint of 7.7 seconds, whereas the AWD option is much quicker with a 0-60 speed of 5.5 seconds.

Volkswagen proffers a three-year or 60,000-mile warranty on all its cars, along with an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty on its batteries.

Unlike cars with petrol or diesel engines that need to be serviced every year the ID.4 and other electric cars only need to be checked over once every two years. This is because electric cars have fewer moving parts.
