More than two thirds of UK drivers support lowering VAT to combat rising fuel prices

New data released today by our expert Insight team showed that 69 per cent of all those surveyed agreed that action needed to be taken to support those coping with the sudden hefty rises. In the over 55s age bracket, this figure was even higher at nearly three-quarters of respondents supporting the idea (73 per cent).

Fuel prices have recently jumped to a record high level of 142.94p a litre, following the national fuel crisis earlier in the month. It’s a massive 28p more per litre than a year ago and is placing a huge burden on families and small businesses. Prices look like they will rise over £1.50 in the coming weeks, despite delivery systems now being supported by the UK army and shortages no longer being an issue.

Interestingly, there was geographical variation in how strongly the move to lower VAT was supported, suggesting that Northern areas are feeling the pinch more than the Southern ones. The North East region saw the highest level of agreement with the move, at 78 percent.

Other interesting geographical trends included:

    • Sheffield showed the strongest support, with 79% of respondents agreeing with lowering VAT to combat fuel prices
    • Newcastle was close behind at 78%
    • Liverpool and Glasgow showed 77% in support
    • North East, North West and Yorkshire and Humberside regions most strongly supported the move (78%, 73% and 73% respectively) while Greater London showed on 59% support

Founder of Choosemycar.com Nick Zapolski said the Government needs to address the growing demand for action as prices continue to climb.

“It’s been a difficult time financially for many people as they continue to feel the effects of furlough, job losses and other financial implications from the pandemic.

“The last thing overstretched families and small businesses need right now is a further burden on their pockets – especially with Christmas just around the corner.

“Our research proves that the Government needs to take action now to ensure that spiralling fuel costs are mitigated by lower VAT.”
